Our Story

Meet the Locals Behind Sarasota Bay’s Favorite Kayak Tours

Family picture of Shane, Holly and Maverick at the beach At Happy Paddler Kayak Tours & EcoVentures, the water isn’t just our workplace — it’s our heritage! Owners Holly and Shane are lifelong locals who have lived, worked, and played on the waters surrounding Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, and Lido Key for generations. Both grew up as ‘island rats’, exploring the waterways, fishing, and finding all the best places and ways to enjoy the water. Shane’s family roots trace all the way back to the 1800s right here in Sarasota Bay and Holly’s grandfather was the beloved owner of the popular Colony Restaurant in the St. Armand’s Circle in the 1950’s. As a teenager, Holly worked as a watersports rental attendant and lifeguard at the legendary Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. Her love for the ocean grew into a career in science—she went on to earn a PhD in Marine Science before co-founding Happy Paddler with Shane in 2013. The dream is alive!

Today, Happy Paddler operates from three carefully chosen launch locations around Sarasota Bay. Each site holds a personal connection to our story and offers unforgettable paddling adventures filled with manatees, dolphins, and stunning mangrove ecosystems. At the north end of Longboat Key, our private kayak launch gives guests exclusive access to the calm, crystal-clear waters between Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key. This area has it allmanatees and dolphins, mangroves, and an incredible white-sand beach that is accessible only by boat.
  • Here, our Coastal Island Tour explores the clear, wildlife-rich passage between Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island, where dolphins and manatees feed and often play alongside your kayak.
  • Guests can also experience the magic of a Gulf sunset on our unforgettable Sunset Kayak Tour.
Fun fact… Shane spent his childhood jumping off the dock into these waters, just across the water from the private launch we now use for our most popular experiences! Midway down Longboat Key is our gorgeous Bayfront Park location. This launch spot beautifully blends wildlife encounters with dolphins and manatees, casting for fish, and exploring quiet mangrove-lined waters.
  • Rent one of our kayaks and paddle through nearby mangrove forests, explore the Audubon Bird Sanctuary Islands, and watch for manatees, dolphins, and coastal birds.
Fun fact… Holly grew up just down the street in Longboat Key Estates, where she spent her childhood fishing off the dock in these waters with her grandfather and sister — often reeling in Red Drum and Seatrout. A photo of her proudly holding a catch as a child still sits at our check-in counter. On Lido Key, just minutes from downtown Sarasota, St. Armand’s Circle, and Longboat Key, Happy Paddler offers one of the most iconic and immersive eco-adventures in Florida — paddling through the enchanting mangrove forests in the heart of Lido Key’s maze of mangrove tunnels in Ted Sperling Nature Park.
  • This place is perfect for families and anyone looking for an easy breezy, unique adventure that will stay with you forever. Rent a single or tandem kayak here and explore the mangrove tunnels on your own.
  • Happy Paddler offers the Mangrove Tunnels Kayak Tour, which gives you a truly immersive, end-to-end guided eco-experience, so that you can focus solely on soaking up those lifelong memories.
Fun fact…  Shane has been guiding in the Lido Key mangrove tunnels since 2009. His nickname here? “The Professor”—a title earned from sharing his deep knowledge and contagious enthusiasm for Sarasota’s marine life and mangrove ecosystems.
